Kellerjoch, Zillertal
Karspitze, Zillertal

The Zillertal valley is surrounded by the Zillertaler Alps, the Kitzbühler Alps and the Tuxer Alps. The possibilities of amazing hiking in this area are endless: you will certainly have a unique experience whether you want one day trips where you have a comfortable base in the valley or an extended tour where you sleep in huts on the mountain away from civilization.

Suggested tours:

Rastkogel Hütte:

We go to Hochfügen by bus. First, we walk on a quiet dirt road. Then, along a narrow path that takes us to “Zidanjoch” at an altitude of 2.127 metres. (We have the possibility of climbing “Roßkopf” (2.576 m.a.s.l.) from here.) There is an imposing view over the whole of the Zillertal valley from this point. Afterwards, we continue down to “Rastkogel Hütte” where we can refresh ourselves with some of their most delicious Tyrolean dishes. (It is also possible to stay overnight and ascend the “Rastkogel” (2.762 m.a.s.l.) the following day.) From this lovely hut we trek to the “Zillertaler Höhenstrasse” (approx. an hour) from where we can catch the bus back to Zell am Ziller.

Difficulty: Moderate to difficult depending on which version you choose.

Duration: 4-5 hours for the short version.

We take the cable car from Hainzenberg to the Gerlosstein ski area which is at an altitude of 1.650 metres. From there we walk via "Heimjöchl" (1.984 m.a.s.l.)  and "Brandberger Joch" (2.310 m.a.s.l.), two mountain passes with extraordinary views, to the Schwarzachalm in Gerlos. This is a cozy little hut where you can get typical Zillertaler specialties and where the host entertains you by playing the accordion and telling all sorts of amusing stories. From here we walk down to the main road where we take the bus back to Zell am Ziller.

Difficulty: Moderate.

Duration: 5-6 hours.

Observation: This tour requires good stamina and no fear of heights since it partly goes along narrow mountain trails!
