There are plenty of great mountain bike tours with spectacular views in and around
the Zillertal valley. Some of them are on asphalt and others on gravel roads. There are single tracks and for those looking for an adrenalin kick there are also exciting downhill free ride trails.
We ride to Fügen along the Zillerpromenade. From Fügen we start our ascent to Zidanjoch (2.127 altitude metres) via Hochfügen. First, we pedal on an exciting winding asphalt road. Second, we do it on a quiet dirt road. Finally, we shoulder our bikes the last few hundred vertical metres along a narrow path to the top. After enjoying the view of the Hintertux glacier and some of the highest mountains in the Zillertal valley, we cycle down to the Rastkogel Hütte where we can refresh ourselves with some of their most delicious Tyrolean dishes. From there we descend back to Zell am Ziller via the “Zillertaler Höhenstrasse.”
This trip requires a good physical condition as we bike around 1.600 vertical metres and it takes us between 5 and 7 hours.
We ride from Zell am Ziller to Kreuzwiesenalm (1.884 m.a.s.l.) via Gerlosberg and from Kreuzwiesenalm to Gerlos along the Panoramaweg. We will have the privilege of seeing some of the most magnificent snow-covered mountain peaks and the Durlaßboden Reservoir on our way. From Gerlos we head back to Zell on an asphalt road.
We bike around 1.300 vertical metres and it takes us between 4 and 5 hours.
Observation: It is also possible to do this tour by taking the gondola lift during the first phase. This alternative trip would take us around 3 hours.
Wilde Krimml (adrenalin tour):
Firstly, we take the gondola lift up from Zell am Ziller to Rosenalm (1.744 m.a.s.l.). Secondly, we take the gravel road to Übergangsjoch (2.500 altitude metres) where we will find a steep but stunning descent in open terrain before us. From there we bike down to Krimmlalm (2.063 m.a.s.l.). Thirdly, we go a few hundred vertical meters up to Isskogel (2.280 m.a.s.l.). From there we cycle down, first on a single trail and then on a dirt road. Finally, we can go on a “downhill free ride trail” if you dare!
This trip requires a good physical condition and steep descent skills.
